Guidance for the Use of Portable Changeable Message Signs in Work Zones

According to the Roadway Safety Consortium (2011), "Portable Changeable Message Signs (PCMS)s are commonly used in work zones to convey real-time information to drivers, as well as to call additional attention to hazards identified by static warning signs." The objective of this document is to introduce PCMS and exploratory strategies in work zones to convey their benefits and limitations. This document also discusses when and how to implement PCMS strategies and presents other key aspects to consider before and during implementation.
