About
This is a course developed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The entire class should take approximately 4.5 hours to complete. About one-third of all roads in the United States are unpaved. Like fingerprints, each unpaved road is unique. The surface may be gravel, crushed rock, or sand, but each roadway requires maintenance to remain in good condition. Do you know how gravel roads are built and maintained? You guessed it: using a motor grader. Gravel roads provide an all-weather surface as well as farm-to-market and other access. Plus, they are easier to build and maintain. With 1.2 million miles of unpaved roads, motor grader operators have a very important job. This course covers the safety, operation, and function of motor grader equipment and the practices involved in the effective operation of motor graders for the constructing, maintaining, and restoring of unpaved, gravel roads. This course is intended for various positions within local agencies and tribal governments, specifically those who are responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining gravel roads. The primary target audience includes grader operators, maintenance and technicians, inspectors, and supervisors. Construction and design engineers, project managers, and agency officials may also benefit from this course. Participants are encouraged to complete the Gravel Road Construction and Maintenance course prior to this course. Training includes: 1. Get Ready to Operate! 2. Knowing Your Motor Grader 3. Conducting Walk-around Inspections 4. Operating the Motor Grader 5. Reshaping the Road 6. Working Around Roadway Features and Conditions This course is hosted on an outside platform. If you have issues accessing the class, please contact FHWA. After completing the course, you will receive a certificate from FHWA. You will need to submit that certificate to us using the form contained within this class for credit. The course can be counted for Road Scholar I Credit.
