About
This is a course developed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The entire class should take approximately 5 hours to complete. Gravel roads are unsurfaced and vary in width and function but are typically considered a type of rural road, often providing agricultural access. Most often, gravel roads serve as local roads to allow access over mobility; therefore, they are low speed, low traffic roadways. Unlike paved roads, gravel roads are not intended to sustain their original construction attributes over an extended amount of time and require routine maintenance to keep the surface functioning as planned. Consequently, understanding gravel road design, construction, and maintenance is very important. Federal Highway Administration recently revised the Gravel Roads Construction and Maintenance Guide, which is an invaluable resource for managing gravel surfaced roads throughout the Nation and the world. Using this resource, we’ve created this web-based training (WBT) course, which addresses the basics of gravel road design, construction, and maintenance. This course is intended for local agency and tribal transportation officials, managers, and motor grader operators who are responsible for designing and maintaining gravel surfaced roads. Training includes: 1. Introduction to Gravel Roads 2. Basics of Gravel Road Design 3. Fundamentals of Base and Surface Gravel 4. Equipment 5. Construction 6. Maintenance 7. Dust Control 8. Condition Assessment and Asset Management This course is hosted on an outside platform. If you have issues accessing the class, please contact FHWA. After completing the course, you will receive a certificate from FHWA. You will need to submit that certificate to us using the form contained within this class for credit. The course can be counted for Road Scholar II credit as a substitution for Gravel Design and Maintenance.
