Cold Weather Driving Safety

This Tailgate Talk is part of the NLTAPA collection.

SAFETY TIPS

  • Winterize your vehicle: Check tires (consider snow tires), antifreeze, windshield wipers, fluids, battery, and other critical systems.

  • Clear all snow and ice: Remove snow from your windshield, windows, mirrors, roof, hood, trunk, and all lights so you can see—and be seen.

  • Drive according to conditions: Reduce your speed well below the posted limit when roads are icy or snowy. Maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle ahead.

  • Expect the unexpected: Be ready to slow down or stop suddenly. Give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination safely.

  • Keep your lights on: Use your headlights so other drivers can see you, even during daylight hours.

  • Use safe braking techniques: Avoid slamming on brakes. Apply steady, controlled pressure to prevent skidding.

  • Recover from skids safely: If your vehicle starts to skid, gently steer in the direction you want to go to regain control.

  • Drive defensively: Stay alert to the actions of others, and never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
