A Deadly Weapon

This Tailgate Talk is part of the NLTAPA collection.

What weighs about 2 tons, can travel more than 80 feet in about one second, and can strike with enough force to penetrate walls, fences, or other objects? Nearly all of you own one—and drive one.

A vehicle, whether a company vehicle or personal transportation, can be deadly in the hands of a careless driver. Vehicle operation must be taken seriously and handled with respect. Driving is not a right, but a privilege. A strong defensive driving attitude is essential to staying safe on the road.

PLAY THE DEFENSE

  • Always wear your seat belt.

  • Adjust all accessories before driving, including mirrors and seat position.

  • Secure loose objects inside the vehicle. In an evasive maneuver, unsecured items such as toolboxes or briefcases can become dangerous projectiles. Do not place hard hats or other objects on the rear window shelf.

  • Focus on driving, not personal issues or work-related concerns. Stay alert to your actions, the actions of others, and roadway conditions.

  • Maintain a safe following distance. You should be able to prepare to stop within two seconds, regardless of speed. It takes about three-quarters of a second to recognize a hazard and another three-quarters of a second to move from the accelerator to the brake. At 55 mph, a vehicle travels more than 80 feet per second and about 120 feet before braking begins.

  • Use extreme caution when adjusting radios, using cell phones, or handling any device that distracts you from defensive driving.

  • Never operate a vehicle after consuming alcohol. Use a designated driver at social events where alcohol is present.

  • Watch for blind spots when changing lanes. Look carefully in all directions and always use turn signals.

  • Keep a calm attitude. Avoid aggressive driving and unnecessary risks. Know and obey all traffic laws and regulations.
