Cold Weather Slips, Trips & Falls Safety

This Tailgate Talk is part of the NLTAPA collection.

When cold weather hits, it brings more than just freezing temperatures and frosty mornings—it also brings extra hazards. Ice, snow, and wet floors can quickly turn a normal day into a bad one. Slips, trips, and falls are among the most common causes of workplace injuries every year.

SMART STEPS FOR SLIPPERY SITUATIONS

  • Keep floors and walkways clear. Wipe up water, salt, or slush as soon as possible.

  • Choose the right shoes. Wear slip-resistant footwear outdoors and change into other shoes once inside.

  • Slow down. Rushing increases your chances of falling. Allow sufficient amount of time to get where you are going.

  • Walk like a penguin. Take short, flat steps and keep your center of gravity over your feet when walking on ice or snow.

  • Stay alert. Pay attention to stairs, entryways, parking lots, and other high-risk areas.

  • Carry less. Keep at least one hand free to steady yourself—make extra trips if needed.

  • Report hazards. If you spot an icy patch, put down ice melt or let maintenance know right away.

  • Look out for others. Offer help to anyone who might need a hand.

  • Use extra caution in poor lighting. It’s harder to spot slick spots in dim areas.

  • Avoid ladders when possible. Use a snow rake instead of climbing onto your roof.
