Designing Pedestrian Facilities for Accessibility
OVERVIEW
Facilities in the public right-of-way (including walkways, ramps, curb ramps, landings, crosswalks, and pedestrian overpasses and underpasses) must be designed, constructed, and maintained to serve all users.
This class will identify laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards pertaining to accessibility for persons with disabilities. Requirements for ensuring accessibility in existing facilities versus work in new construction and alternations will be discussed. Design elements necessary for achieving accessibility in the public right-of-way will be reviewed. Best practices will be identified.
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the course, attendees should be able to:
Identify applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards pertaining to accessibility for persons with disabilities
Identify best practices
Understand requirements for ensuring accessibility in existing facilities versus work in new construction
Understand challenges in the PROW faced by persons with disabilities and design elements necessary for achieving accessibility in the PROW
AUDIENCE
This class should be of interest to personnel responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining facilities in the public right-of-way including engineers, MPO staff, public works directors, street supervisors, and crew leaders.
